Franciscan School of Theology
The University of San Diego and the Franciscan School of Theology (FST) announced that the FST campus would relocate to the USD campus in the summer of 2019.
Mission and Ministry Center
Construction of USD’s new Mission and Ministry Center was completed in mid-2019, providing a home for Mission and Ministry offices and activities.
Torero Promise Expands
Catholic high schools in Riverside and San Bernardino counties were added to those in San Diego county in the spring of 2019, with significant financial support offered to qualified students. Learn more at sandiego.edu.
Finding Common Ground
USD’s Choral Scholars took place in a binational showcase dubbed Common Ground Voices/La Frontera with a goal to generate a meaningful collaboration around music.
Poet Laureate Comes to Campus
Current U.S, Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith came to campus as part of the celebration of the 15th anniversary of the Lindsay J. Cropper Memorial Writers Services in the spring of 2019.
A More Inclusive Campus
USD’s decision to change names on multiple buildings and spaces on campus was announced; the goal of the collaborative effort was to recognize our Catholic heritage and the rich history of the Kumeyaay Nation.
Fowler Global Social Innovation Challenge
A joint initiative that will increase the scope and scale of social entrepreneurship was made possible by a generous multi-million dollar commitment by Ron and Alexis Fowler.
Congratulations, Class of 2019
More than 2,600 degrees were awarded in May 2019 to both undergraduate and graduate students. Seven graduation events celebrated the achievements of the newest members of the Torero alumni community.

Christ: Life, Death and Resurrection
One of USD’s most highly anticipated art exhibits opened at the Hoehn Family Galleries in the fall of 2019. The collection of Italian Renaissance drawings and prints from The British Museum included an authentic Michelangelo drawing, “The Three Crosses.”
Voting Surge Among USD Students
A report released in the fall of 2019 showed that student voting at the university increased 45 percent in 2018 from a rate of just under 17 percent in 2014; our students turned out well above the national average.
Multimillion Dollar Gift to Benefit USD Real Estate Students
Real estate icon and San Diego native Malin Burnham and his wife, Roberta, made a $2.3 million leadership gift in the fall of 2019 to the Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate within the School of business to support student scholarships, faculty and more.
Envisioning 2024
A number of visionaries on campus were celebrated as the university seeks to develop dramatic and innovative approaches to our work. Visionary initiatives were awarded to forward-thinkers across campus.
Justice in Mexico
A $3 million federal grant was awarded to USD in the fall of 2019 by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, bringing the total federal grant for OASIS to $9.3 million since 2006.
Celebrating Toreros
2019’s Homecoming and Family Weekend included Alumni Honors, a Big Blue Bash concert, Casino Night, Torero Talks, a tailgate party followed by a football victory and much more.
